Houston

Ellis Ray Lawrence Sr., a steadfast beacon of faith and hard work, passed away on December 16, 2025, in Humble, Texas. Born on November 9, 1960, in Pontiac, Michigan, he was the son of James Ellis Lawrence and Mrs. LeeAnna Joy (Rhone) Lawrence. From his formative years, Ellis exhibited a vibrant spirit and an unwavering dedication to serving Christ, a cornerstone of his existence that he held dearly throughout his life.

Ellis cherished his time spent playing sports with family and friends, where he found joy in each shared moment. He possessed a profound comfort in the simple blessings life offered, embracing gatherings for picnics, joyous outings to the basketball court, and adventurous travels to new destinations. His love for God was the heart of his being, and this was reflected in his daily practice of reading the word of God and sharing the Gospel through both his actions and words.

In 1978, Ellis moved to Houston, Texas, where he began a new chapter in his life. On October 12, 1985, he united in marriage with Shetaqua LaPray Rogers (Stewart), forging a partnership that blossomed into a loving family. Together, they nurtured three children: daughter Shakira Chantae Lawrence, who sadly preceded him in death; son Ellis Ray Lawrence Jr.; and daughter Kirayonna LaShae Lawrence. He also embraced the role of an adoptive father to Tiara Charae Lawrence, whom he lovingly raised as his own.

Professionally, Ellis was known for his tireless dedication and strong work ethic. He devoted numerous years to management positions at NTB, Palais Royal, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Kroger, and Auto Zone. His commitment to excellence in every role he undertook left an indelible mark on all those who had the pleasure of working alongside him.

Ellis was preceded in death by his father, Mr. James Ellis Lawrence, and his mother, Mrs. LeeAnna Joy Lawrence, as well as his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rhone of Mobile, Alabama. He grew up amid the love of ten siblings, each of whom he cherished deeply. He is survived by his brothers Zachary Wayne Lawrence, Marcus Lawrence, Wali Abdyr Rahman, James Rhone, Thomas G. Lawrence, Reginald A. Lawrence, Curtis Lawrence, and his sisters Joyce (George Meads) Lawrence and Merrie Caye Bell Lawrence.

On January 16, 2025, Ellis found peace with the Lord, leaving behind a rich legacy of faith, love, and devotion. He is profoundly missed by his immediate family, aunts, uncles, and a host of relatives and friends, all of whom carry forth his memory and embody the example he set of living with purpose and a great spirit.
